“it’s what inspiration is about”
There are few artists in the music industry who have had more influence on jazz than Herbie Hancock, the genre-busting composer and virtuoso pianist who is the Bill and Carolyn Powers Creative Chair for Jazz for the LA Phil. Hancock capped the inaugural jazz series in Walt Disney Concert Hall with a Gershwin exploration, and his astonishing interpretation of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at their 2011 season-opening gala was captured as an e-video and later theatercast on the orchestra’s ground-breaking LA Phil LIVE series.
As Creative Chair for Jazz, Hancock is a force behind all of the jazz programming here and at the Hollywood Bowl, luring the field’s artistic leaders with the opportunities only these venues can offer. “I’m much more interested in projects that have the potential to be events, not just records,” he has said. “I want to do something broad-based that has the potential to reach into the life of people in more ways than just their ears.” Walt Disney Concert Hall is just the place to do that, as he has shown us repeatedly with the unique concerts and inspired colleagues he has brought to the Hall.
